Teal was founded in 2014 by George Matus (who was 17 at the time) in Salt Lake City, Utah. Teal’s purpose is to enable unmanned systems to be more than just flying cameras.

Its name comes from that of a bird, the Eurasian teal (Anas crecca) which has a similarly colored stripe on its head. The word is often used colloquially to refer to shades of cyan in general.
